Running a whole nation is a great challenge indeed. Every citizen and indeed the government have objectives. Harmonizing these objectives so that they are collectively supported by the two parties require good leadership skills. The development of any nation is at the heart of leadership. The leadership must, therefore, enact appropriate legislation that will support their objectives. This essay will look into Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States (US). Lincoln assumed office just shortly before the outbreak of the civil war, his mandate very clear on uniting America and ensuring that there was equality for all people living in the United States. The Civil War fought between the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America had its roots in slavery. The Confederate States of America had to leave the Union because they wanted to continue with the business of slavery. This was not taken kindly by the United States of America who was against slavery and supported a united America where all people would be treated with dignity. Abraham Lincoln on assuming the US presidency refused to recognize the Confederate States as an independent nation resulting in the eruption of the Civil War in 1861 (Lincoln 5). The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Lincoln on January 1, 1863, which led to the freeing of the slaves inhabiting the southern states. The success of the war to end slavery would not succeed without the necessary legislation and the voice of the president. During the war, slaves were freed courtesy of the president. Shi and George notes that freed slaves were allowed to join the Union Army (24). This was an indication that slavery was a thing that would come to an end. The president’s goal of a united America where every citizen felt dignified would come true following the amendment of the Constitution. According to Calabresi, there was a need to carry out some constitutional amendments namely the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution (61). The changes would see the readmission of the Confederate States to the US. All US citizens would receive â€Å"equal protection† by the law with the black men receiving rights to vote. Abraham Lincoln great leadership is exhibited by his vast leadership skills. The skills enabled him to have America united and be the great nation it is today. Leadership is about guiding people who at times have divergent views. Abraham Lincoln could listen to different points of few.
